The eleventh edition of MILMUN, the first and longest lasting Model United Nations conference in Italy, will be held from April 18th to 22nd, 2016 in Milan. The conference is organized by the MILMUN Association and is hosted by Bocconi University. From 2006 to 2015 the MILMUN conferences have brought to Milan, Italy more than 1500 top students from over 100 universities with more than 80 different nationalities with all five continents being represented. Their main fields of study were just as diverse, ranging from Economics, International Relations and Law to History, Medicine and Mathematics.

The main purpose of the conference is to give university students the chance to practice diplomacy by impersonating the role of a diplomat or chairing one of the committees. This will help them train a set of skills, including the ability to speak confidently in public, negotiation skills to form alliances and furthering their country’s position and the drafting of diplomatic documents. The main outcome of the simulation will be contained in the resolutions that each committee will pass on the topics discussed throughout the week. This document is the outcome of strenuous research on the issues under discussion and of challenging negotiations in the conference sessions. Resolutions will also be sent to the respective United Nations and European Union’s organs to challenge them on taking innovative solutions towards some of the most urgent issues on the international agenda.

2016 Conference theme
2016 represents a crucial year for the present and future of the United Nations. In the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Organization its member States decided to honour the pledge made when joining the community of nations – to combine efforts to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom – by coming together and achieving an unprecedented level of cooperation. Starting from January, the commitments made by the leaders of the world will become effective, providing new guidance on the way forward toward the achievement of a future society where nobody is left behind. We deemed it necessary for MILMUN to underline this outstanding development in the way of conceiving the common effort needed to safeguard our common future. For this reason we have selected a theme that highlights the extraordinary nature of this commitment:

Humanity at a Crossroads.
Global Action for Sustainable Development.

The MILMUN 2016 Conference will focus on the ambitious and inspiring framework laid down by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, that promises to tackle and solve the world’s most serious problems. By recognizing that global problems require global solutions, while leaving room for country specificity, it strikes a balance between the interconnectedness of the issues facing society today and the need for each country to take responsibility for its own success.

«We can be the first generation to succeed in ending poverty; just as we may be the last to have a chance of saving the planet.» 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

While the second statement is a poignant affirmation of the imperative to act, the first one lights a spark of hope in a better future claiming that we the peoples have the chance to construct the world we want to live in, a world in which no one is left behind.

The following committees will be simulated:

  • United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
  • International Court of Justice (ICJ)
  • Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
  • Committee of World Food Security (CFS)
  • Council of the European Union: Economic and Social Affairs (CEU ECOFIN)
  • United Nations Development Program Executive Board (UNDP)
  • MILMUN Chronicles
Represent a developing country.
Represent a developing country and change the odds of food security in your favour.

Within the framework of the Sustainable Development Agenda and in a time in which the number of forcibly displaced persons is the highest since World War II, MILMUN 2016 will put a particular emphasis on the multi-dimensional phenomenon of migration. The positive contribution of migrants for inclusive growth and sustainable development, with an accent on the international cooperation to ensure the humane treatment of migrants regardless of their migration status, will be highlighted. In this regard the societal models and the declared commitment of nations to observe and promote the respect of human rights, having allowed violations to occur, come into question.

For these reasons humanity is at a crossroads, the crossroads of future development and sustainability, the crossroads of security threats and freedom from fear, the crossroads of challenges and opportunities. To succeed in achieving a better future for all, our global action is needed. Quoting the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon “the 2030 sustainable agenda is for everybody, everywhere; claim it, demand that commitments are made and promises kept”.

Meet and make friends from all around the world!
Meet and make friends from all around the world!

The Sustainable Development Agenda is a window of opportunity for mankind to make decisions that will shape the years to come, even beyond 2030. We stand at a crossroads where the paths we choose to take will determine our opportunity to forge a future free from fear and violence, free from disease and want, a future of universal respect for human rights and human dignity.
